The list below helps owners and property managers check important safety items before a Fire and Life Safety Inspection. Utilize the checklist to systematically review each aspect of the inspection, ensuring all points are thoroughly evaluated and documented for accuracy and completeness. FACILITY:
□ Property address number visible & legible per Township Ordinance.
□ Outside Fire Lanes are Clear: if present
□ FDC Connection is Accessible: Not obstructed by trees, parked cars, bushes etc. and appropriate thread for the fire department.: if present.
□ FDC Connection is marked: if present
□ Site Hydrants are Clear: if present
□ Site Hydrants are Marked: if present
□ Standpipes(s) are Accessible: if present
□ Standpipe(s) are Marked: if present
□ Information Knox Box is properly updated. Working keys and up to date contact information available at the time of fire inspection.
□ Evacuation plans posted, restaurants, schools, daycares, and worship buildings.
□ Outside Smoking Areas are clear, if present
EXITS:
□ Emergency Exits are Accessible
□ Exit doors operate without difficulty Must be easy to open and open with no special knowledge or force.
□ Exit doors are clearly marked
□ Exit doors/aisles are not obstructed. No storage in exit pathways or in front of exit doors
□ Exit doors are not locked during working hours
□ Exit signs are illuminated
□ Proper installation of exit signs. Exit doors/pathways clearly identified. Exit doors shall have signage located above all doors
□ Emergency Lights are Working. Exit signage operational, battery backup operational and properly maintained
STORAGE:
□ Hallways are clear of items
□ No under stairwell storage
□ Heating appliances maintain safe clearances
□ No combustible materials excessively stored near open flame, heat/electrical sour
□ Dumpster/Garbage area safe distance away from building and combustibles. Dumpster is a minimum of 5 feet from building; with closable lid
□ Excess Garbage is not present
□ No storage within 24 inches of ceiling
□ No storage within 18 inches of sprinkler heads
□ No storage present in exit corridors/exit stairways
□ Flammable liquids stored in flammable liquid storage cabinet
□ Compressed gas cylinders properly secured
FIRE AND SMOKE SPREAD:
□ No missing/damaged ceiling tiles
□ All Wall/ceiling penetrations have adequate fire stop
□ No Fire doors blocked open
□ Fire doors properly close or latch.
ELECTRICAL HAZARDS:
□ No Electrical cords extend through walls and ceilings
□ Door to electrical room labeled.
□ No combustible storage in electrical room
□ All circuits are labeled within panel boards
□ Electrical panels have blank breaker covers
□ The electrical panel box is properly covered
□ Electrical panel access is not obstructed. Electrical panel boards must have a 36' wide x 78' high clear working space, no obstructions
□ Electrical cords do not create tripping hazards
□ Electrical outlets within 6 feet of wet area include GFCI protection
□ Electrical outlet covers are not missing or damaged
□ Electrical outlets switch plates are not missing or damaged
□ Electrical junction boxes are properly covered
□ No exposed/unsafe electrical wiring
□ Extension cords not used as permanent wiring
□ No "daisy chain" of multiplug adapters, power strips, or extension cords. Extension cords may not extend through walls, under carpets, or under doors
FIRE PREVENTION & DETECTION EQUIPMENT:
□ Fire extinguisher inspection is current. Extinguishers must be inspected and tagged by a third-party fire protection contractor
□ Adequate fire extinguishers: within 75 feet travel distance from anywhere in the occupancy
□ Fire extinguishers mounted or in cabinet. Top of extinguisher not higher than 5 feet from floor
□ Fire extinguishers’ access is not obstructed. Extinguishers not blocked in any way
□ No damaged/missing pin/missing tamper seal or discharged fire extinguish
□ Alarm System Inspection. Fire alarm system must be operational; current annual test and inspection record are available for review
□ Fire alarm panel not obstructed and/or damaged
□ Pull stations not obstructed and/or damaged
□ Smoke/heat detectors not obstructed and/or damaged
□ Adequate installation of smoke/heat detectors
□ No obstructed or damaged fire alarm notification devices(horns/bells/strobes)
□ Kitchen Hood Systems Service/Inspection. Kitchen hood suppression systems system must be operational; current test and inspection record available for review
□ Class K extinguisher required for kitchens equipped with hood systems
□ Sprinkler System Annual Test. Fire sprinkler systems must be operational; current annual test and inspection record available for review
□ Fire Pump Annual Test. Fire pump must be operational; current annual test and inspection record available for review
□ No missing sprinkler head or piping escutcheons
□ No signs of defects or damage to any protective systems
