Winter Storms and Travel

The North Whitehall Township Public Works Department is committed to keeping Township roads safe and passable throughout the winter season. Because every winter storm is different, snow and ice removal operations are adjusted based on the timing, temperature, accumulation, and severity of each storm.

During lighter storms with less than 2 inches of snowfall, salting is generally the primary method used to treat roadways. When snowfall reaches approximately 2 inches or more, plowing operations typically begin. Additional salt applications may be necessary during and after a storm to address remaining snow and ice.

Our priority is to maintain safe, passable roadways. Please understand that roads may not always be completely free of snow and ice, particularly during active storms or periods of extremely cold temperatures.

Help Us Keep Roads Clear – Move Vehicles Off the Street

Residents are strongly encouraged to remove all vehicles from Township roadways before and during snowstorms.

Vehicles parked along roadways create obstacles for snowplows, slow down snow removal operations, and can prevent crews from properly clearing streets.

To help our Public Works crews work safely and efficiently, please:

  • Park vehicles in driveways or other off-street parking areas whenever snow is forecast.
  • Avoid parking on Township roads during snow removal operations, especially during significant snow events.
  • Keep cul-de-sacs and turnaround areas clear to allow snowplows and larger equipment to maneuver safely.
  • Do not shovel, blow, or plow snow from driveways or sidewalks into public roadways. This creates hazardous conditions for motorists and may require crews to return to previously cleared areas.
  • Keep trash and recycling containers out of the roadway during snow removal operations.

Moving vehicles off the street allows crews to clear roads more thoroughly, reduces the need for return trips, and helps restore safe travel conditions more quickly.

Your cooperation makes a difference! A clear roadway allows our crews to do their jobs safely and efficiently.

Winter Driving Safety

During significant winter storms, residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is essential, please allow extra time, reduce your speed, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and snow removal equipment.

Before winter weather arrives, motorists should inspect their vehicles, including tires, brakes, battery, lights, windshield wipers, and fluid levels.

It is also recommended to carry an emergency winter travel kit containing a flashlight, jumper cables, cell phone, snow shovel, first aid supplies, ice scraper, warm clothing, and bottled water.

Remember these important safety tips:

  • Remove snow and ice from your vehicle, including the hood, roof, windows, and lights, before driving.
  • Turn on your headlights whenever your windshield wipers are in use, as required by Pennsylvania law.
  • Never attempt to pass a snowplow while it is actively clearing or treating a roadway.
  • Give snow removal equipment plenty of room to operate.

Working Together for a Safer Winter

The North Whitehall Township Public Works Department appreciates the patience and cooperation of our residents during winter weather events.

Our crews work diligently, often during overnight hours and challenging weather conditions, to keep Township roadways passable.

By moving vehicles off the streets, keeping snow out of roadways, and allowing snowplows room to operate, residents play an important role in helping us maintain safe roads for everyone.

Our goal is to get everyone through another winter season SAFELY!

FIRE HYDRANT

If there is a fire hydrant near your property, please help keep it clear of snow following a winter storm.

Snow-covered hydrants can delay emergency responders when every second counts.

Clearing snow around hydrants helps protect your home and neighborhood.

PennDOT Winter Guidelines for State Roads

PennDOT Winter Service Guidelines are available for everyone who lives on a State Road or travels on a State Road. When the winter weather strikes, PennDOT crews are out treating the roadways around the clock. The department's aim is to keep roads passable, but sometimes not always completely free of ice and snow.

PennDOT reminds motorists that 511PA provides free, 24-hour traveler information services or you can log onto www.511pa.com before you head out.

511PA is your statewide source for winter road conditions, traffic congestions and tie-ups, as well as access to more than 500 traffic cameras around the State. PennDOT has added more than 600 additional miles to its reporting network bringing the total to more than 2,900 miles of roadway where PennDOT is collecting traffic incidents and winter road conditions.
